I get an error stating that my version is out-of-date. What does this mean?

Background: ContactsLaw is a client-server system, meaning that software components exist on both the server and each user's PC. When your administrator installs an update to ContactsLaw, the server components are updated immediately. The ContactsLaw application on each user's PC, however, must be updated separately. ContactsLaw normally performs an update check when you start the application, prompting you to install the latest version.

Sometimes, the update check may fail and ContactsLaw may start without updating to the latest version. If ContactsLaw prevents you from connecting to the database because the version you're running is out-of-date, the following will require investigation:
  • Did you start the application normally?
ContactsLaw usually launches using the .appref-ms shortcut which starts the auto-updater. It is also possible to start the application from its main executable (in the Program Files folder on your computer), however this bypasses the update check.

  • Are other users experiencing the same problem?
Check with your system administrator as to whether the update installed correctly on the server. They may need to run the update process again.

  • Have you tried re-installing the application?
Your system administrator should be able to provide you with the URL for an intranet site from which ContactsLaw was originally installed. You can attempt to repair or re-install it.

  • Does the problem reoccur?
There may be a problem with the installation of the .NET Framework on your PC. Components can become corrupted through component failure or malicious software. It may be necessary to reinstall the framework or your entire operating system.
